When you are publishing a genealogy, be it in a written report or on a website, it is always considered to be effective to have some level of consistency with how you present data so that readers develop some confidence in the quality of your results and assertions.

I started web publishing about 1998 or 1999 and saw then that I needed to develop a series of personal rules for how I documented data. Some of the choices I have made can be easily accepted. Others have turned out to be personal choices that other researchers have decided to adopt.

I have several guiding principals when developing my personal standards and they are in part a product of the tools I have used for documenting my genealogies. But one of the overriding considerations is always “How do I wish my end product to look?”

I have written a series of essays on various aspects of my current rules for your perusal. I say current rules because every so often I get smarter and see a better way so I have changed some rules.

As always I welcome your comments and suggestions.
